Based in Karachi, Pakistan, the Assistant Manager Utilities will play a crucial role within the operational engineering team, ensuring the reliable operation and maintenance of essential utility systems such as water and steam, HVAC, compressed air, and related infrastructure. This position requires the timely execution of maintenance activities to support uninterrupted production while maintaining strict adherence to Quality Management Systems (QMS), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) standards. The role also includes managing departmental budgets and spearheading continuous process improvements to enhance efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee the operation and maintenance of both conventional and clean utilities, including Purified Water (PW), Water for Injection (WFI), Reverse Osmosis (RO), Process Steam (PS), and Waste Water treatment systems. Ensure that preventive maintenance (PM) activities are carried out in line with the annual PM schedule using the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS). Maintain an adequate inventory of critical spare parts to avoid operational disruptions and major equipment failures.
Coordinate with procurement teams and external vendors for fabrication, upgrades, and procurement of spare parts. Ensure compliance with all statutory and regulatory requirements related to utilities, including boilers and pressurized equipment. Supervise the maintenance of operational logs and conduct gap analyses to uphold Good Engineering Standards (GES) and Good Quality Practices (GQP).
Manage deviations, change controls, and risk tracking through the VEEVA system. Provide support to project teams during utilities-related initiatives and ensure strict adherence to EHS protocols and permit requirements during maintenance work. Oversee the calibration of utility-related instruments according to site Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and maintain systems within validated parameters to guarantee consistent quality and reliability.
Contribute to strategic planning by assisting with capacity planning, forecasting utility usage, and implementing new technologies to simplify processes and reduce costs. Troubleshoot and resolve operational issues promptly. Lead the recruitment, training, and development of team members to maximize their performance and align with business objectives.
Develop and enforce policies and procedures that ensure safe engineering operations, production support, and compliance with both Group and local regulatory standards. Maintain full compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations. Adhere to all relevant Global GSK policies and procedures, including GMP, ETCM, Technical Procedures (TPs), Business Continuity Planning (BCP), EHS, GQP, and QMS standards.
Required Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is mandatory. Candidates should possess 2-3 years of relevant experience in a similar role, demonstrating strong problem-solving skills to effectively manage operational challenges. Excellent communication skills are essential for effective coordination with internal teams, vendors, and other stakeholders. Proven leadership capabilities with experience in team development and performance management are required to meet business goals.
