The Legal Assistant supports attorneys in the delivery of legal services by performing administrative duties, legal research, document drafting, and case preparation. This role requires strong organizational, communication, and legal knowledge skills.
Key Responsibilities
Legal Document Preparation:
Draft correspondence, pleadings, subpoenas, motions, contracts, and discovery documents.
Proofread legal documents for accuracy and compliance with formatting standards.
Research and Case Preparation:
Compile, analyze, and summarize case files and evidence.
Assist with trial preparation, including witness coordination and document exhibits.
Administrative Support:
Manage calendars, schedule appointments, and coordinate court dates.
Organize and maintain files (physical and digital).
Answer phones, handle mail, and liaise with clients and court personnel.
Client Interaction:
Communicate with clients to obtain information or relay attorney updates.
Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all client communications.
Case Management:
Open and close case files.
Track deadlines and monitor case progress.
Support billing processes and timekeeping as needed.
Skills and Qualifications
LLB (Bachelor’s degree preferred).
3–5 years of legal office experience preferred.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.
Work Environment
Legal Assistants typically work in law firms, corporate legal departments, or government agencies. The position often requires overtime during trial preparation or to meet filing deadlines.
