Job Summary
SMEC is seeking a highly experienced Tunnel Design Expert to join a significant hydropower project located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) Province, Pakistan. This pivotal role focuses on leading the design and construction supervision of tunnel structures, specifically for dams and hydropower facilities. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with contractors and local engineering teams to ensure the project’s execution aligns with safety standards, quality requirements, and timelines. Key Responsibilities
The Tunnel Design Expert will be responsible for reviewing and executing detailed designs, planning, and overseeing the construction of tunnel structures within the hydropower project. This includes supervising tunnel construction activities performed by contractors and leading local engineering teams to maintain effective oversight and coordination.

The role requires recommending and approving scopes of work for additional underground investigations such as tunnels and shafts. The candidate will review geological and geotechnical data related to tunnels and power intake structures, ensuring the accuracy and relevance of information used in design and construction.

Approving drilling programs for underground investigations is a key responsibility, alongside reviewing and validating design layouts for all tunneling and associated works. The expert will suggest and monitor safety measures to protect personnel, materials, and construction activities throughout the project lifecycle.

Preparation of technical reports related to tunnel design and construction will be required, as well as verifying diversion and power intake drawings prepared by CAD operators. The candidate will provide critical input to the Site Design Group to assess and implement necessary design updates.

Developing Finite Element Analysis (FEA) models using actual field data is an essential technical task, along with conducting thorough technical assessments and analyses related to tunnel construction and stability. The expert will oversee quality assurance processes to ensure compliance with project specifications and standards.

Monitoring and reporting on project progress concerning tunnels is vital, including recommending risk mitigation measures during construction. Throughout the construction phase, the Tunnel Design Expert will provide ongoing technical support and guidance to resolve challenges and ensure smooth project delivery.

Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline from an internationally recognized institution or accredited by HEC/PEC.
- A minimum of 20 years of professional experience, with at least 15 years in relevant engineering roles.
- At least 10 years of specialized experience in the design and construction of tunnels for dams and hydropower projects.
- Strong expertise in geotechnical engineering principles and tunneling methods.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively liaise with diverse teams and stakeholders.
