Job Summary
We are looking for an experienced Data Governance Lead to design, develop, and implement robust data governance frameworks that ensure data quality, protection, and regulatory compliance across the organization. The ideal candidate will be responsible for creating and executing data governance strategies, policies, and procedures that align with both business objectives and legal requirements. This role demands expertise in metadata management, data stewardship, and integrating governance practices within modern data platforms and Agile workflows. The successful candidate will also lead governance councils, manage teams, and champion a culture of data literacy throughout the enterprise.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and implement enterprise-wide data governance frameworks encompassing policies and procedures focused on data quality, lineage, stewardship, and metadata management. Define clear roles and stewardship structures by establishing and managing data owners, stewards, and governance councils or committees to ensure accountability.
Leverage tools such as Informatica Axon, Collibra, Azure Purview, and Alation to facilitate metadata management, lineage tracking, and stewardship activities. Align governance strategies with data platforms including Snowflake, Databricks, and Azure Synapse, embedding governance seamlessly into Agile and CI/CD workflows.
Monitor data accuracy, completeness, and consistency by implementing controls, profiling, and remediation routines to uphold high data quality standards. Enforce data governance policies in compliance with regulations such as GDPR, CCPA, SOX, and HIPAA, conducting regular audits to maintain adherence and mitigate risks.
Educate and train teams across the organization on governance best practices through workshops, documentation, and ongoing support to foster a data-literate culture. Collaborate closely with IT and platform teams to embed metadata, lineage, and governance rules into data systems and tools.
Define and track governance KPIs, provide regular reports on initiatives, and recommend continuous improvements to governance processes. In larger organizations, oversee Data Governance Officers or stewards by managing hiring, mentoring, performance evaluations, and delegation of oversight responsibilities.
Required Qualifications
Proven experience in data governance, quality management, and compliance within large-scale enterprises is essential. Strong technical skills with hands-on familiarity in data governance and quality tools such as Collibra, Alation, Informatica, Great Expectations, Soda, or dbt are required.
Expertise in metadata management, data classification, and lineage maintenance is critical. Advanced proficiency in SQL and scripting languages like Python or Shell for automation purposes is expected. Practical experience with cloud data platforms and storage/catalog solutions including AWS, Azure, and GCP, as well as Master Data Management (MDM) systems, is necessary.
A solid understanding of regulatory frameworks including GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA, ISO, and COBIT is mandatory. The candidate should possess a strategic and analytical mindset with the ability to align governance initiatives with business goals effectively.
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills are vital to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences and secure executive buy-in. Leadership capabilities to guide teams, drive cultural change, and manage enterprise-level governance initiatives are required. Strong attention to detail, ethical awareness, and commitment to maintaining data confidentiality and integrity are essential.
Preferred Qualifications and Benefits
Experience integrating governance within Agile and CI/CD workflows is highly desirable. A proven track record of leading governance councils and committees will be advantageous. The ability to measure and report governance progress through KPIs and recommend continuous improvements is preferred.
