Designing & Fabrication of Bio-Sand Filter

The availability of clean drinking water is an emerging issue which the world needs to address. There are several organizations such as WHO, CAWST etc. which are working on the provision of safe drinking water for everyone. In Pakistan, the same problem is faced throughout the country. The underprivileged areas are much more affected by this problem and the residents are forced to live without the availability of pure drinking water, which causes many diseases. We, in our thesis, have provided a solution to this problem by constructing a Bio-sand Filter. Bio-sand filtration is a technique use for the purification of water by using sand and incorporating a biological layer into its working to treat or make it suitable for drinking. Our model comprised, fabricating and constructing a Bio-sand filter using locally available materials, which is affordable for everyone. The results obtained were according to the WHO standards. Tests were carried out, which showed effective removal of biological contaminants. The water obtained by using Bio-sand filter is fit for drinking.
