Accountant

We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Accountant with a strong understanding of UK accounting standards, VAT compliance, and the preparation of annual statutory accounts. The ideal candidate will manage day-to-day bookkeeping, ensure accurate VAT filings, and assist in the preparation of year-end financial statements in accordance with UK regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

Prepare and submit UK VAT returns (standard rate, flat rate, margin schemes, etc.)
Prepare and finalise statutory year-end accounts for companies
Maintain accurate general ledgers and balance sheet reconciliations
Liaise with HMRC on tax matters including VAT queries and compliance checks
Ensure timely submission of Companies House and HMRC filings
Process and reconcile bank statements, payroll journals, and supplier invoices
Work closely with directors or external accountants on corporation tax submissions
Support audits by preparing necessary documentation and reconciliations
Provide financial insights and reporting to management

Requirements:

Minimum 3 years of experience in a UK-focused accounting role
Strong knowledge of UK VAT rules, including partial exemption and EU/NI trade
Experience preparing year-end accounts for limited companies
Proficient in accounting software (e.g., Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, FreeAgent)
Excellent Excel skills
Attention to detail, accuracy, and organisational skills

Desirable:

ACCA / ACA / AAT qualified or part-qualified
Experience working in an accountancy practice
Familiarity with Making Tax Digital (MTD) requirements
Knowledge of food & electronics industry, payroll, or management accounts is a plus
