Project: Education and Life Outcomes

Position: Full-time

Start Date: As soon as possible

The Institute of Development and Economic Alternatives (IDEAS) is looking for young men and women to undertake qualitative fieldwork for a study on the outcomes of education and its impact on the lives of young people. The study will be in communities in Sindh (Karachi and Hala) and Punjab (Sargodha, Rawalpindi, Jhang and Khanewal). We will be hiring female interviewers in Sindh

This is a full-time position for a period of 4 months and will involve extensive field travel and field visits (supported and financed by the organization). The employment will be with IDEAS, a think tank based in Lahore, and successful candidates will work with Dr. Rabea Malik (IDEAS) and Dr. Tayyaba Tamim (SOE, LUMS).  

Responsibilities:

Field work will be conducted by the provincial field teams in their respective sites (mentioned above).

They will be responsible for:

  • Collecting and saving data including:
  • Conducting in-depth interviews (IDIs) in the field.
  • Conducting focus group discussions (FGDs)  in the field. 
  • Taking field notes as per the note format introduced in field team training.
  • Maintaining a diary with insights from the field as per instructions provided in the field team training.  
  • Gathering information in an objective, appropriate and sensitive way by carefully observing and actively listening while gathering information from various sources during field visits. 
  • Acting with appropriate respect for local culture, understanding and interpreting reactions in a culturally and gender sensitive manner.
  • Sharing weekly data collection progress with the Field Coordinator.

Data management including: 

  • Expertise to record, transcribing, maintaining data/ information electronically.
  • Monitoring of the transcription of  in-depth interviews (IDIs)  and focus group discussions (FGDs).
  • Ensuring the quality of collected data and reporting and solving problems as needed. 
  • Complying with data management protocols.  

Other responsibilities: Supporting the project in other tasks as required

Soft skills required:

  • Effectively collaborating with the team and leading the team when required. 
  • Effectively communicating with the Field Coordinator, PI and research teams at head office.
  • Paying close attention to detail during the data collection and data management process. 
  • Managing time efficiently during field visits.
  • Ensuring all goals for qualitative data collection and its submission to the Field Coordinator are met in line with allotted deadlines.

Who should apply? 

  • Individuals with BA, B.Sc or MA, M.Sc degrees in Anthropology, Sociology, History or Development Studies. 
  • Individuals with Fluency in Urdu, Siryaki and Punjabi and Sindhi.
  • Individuals who are internally motivated, with a solid work ethic and willingness to learn.
  • Individuals who are willing and able to travel to sites of field visits and stay there for a period of 7-10 days.
  • Individuals who wish to pursue MA or Ph.D. degrees in Sociology, Anthropology, or Development Studies and wish to develop their empirical qualitative skills.
  • Individuals who have training in qualitative methods and procedures of data collection, such as interviewing, diary keeping, field note taking will be preferred but this experience is not necessary.

Travel arrangements and accommodation will be arranged by IDEAS.
