The Medical Specialist will report to the Medical Superintendent and, through him, to the Health Services Coordinator & Technical Advisor.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop a program of patient care encompassing in-patient, out-patient, and emergency care.
  • Discharge clinical duties in the hospital by conducting ward rounds, OPDs, and providing emergency cover.
  • Stay on call for emergency cases and critically ill patients, being immediately summoned to the hospital when required.
  • Make regular detailed morning & evening rounds of the in-patients, as well as surprise visits, to ensure that work is carried out in accordance with department/hospital policies.
  • Administer the unit, supervise the performance of subordinate staff, and delegate activities they are qualified & competent to perform, in accordance with their clinical privileges & approved SOPs.
  • Provide outpatient consultations, attend to inter-departmental references, and examine in-patients during morning & evening rounds and more frequently when warranted.
  • Independently carry out diagnostic & therapeutic procedures in accordance with approved clinical privileges.
  • Ensure that records of patients treated by the unit are legible, up-to-date, and correctly reflect the patient’s condition and response to treatment.
  • Prepare & verify medical reports, death reports & medico-legal reports issued by the unit.
  • Admit patients from OPD and A&E in accordance with unit protocols.
  • Monitor and evaluate junior doctors & nursing staff responsible for patient care.
  • Provide patient care as per duty roster (ward rounds, OPDs, and on-call duties).
  • Advise the institution in developing cost-effective patient care strategies.
  • Oversee departmental activities, including administration and patient services/care.
Departmental Administrative Responsibilities:
  • Ensure coordination of duties for all para-medical staff in the department.
  • Maintain patient records within the department.
  • Record and track adverse events.
  • Maintain department stock records.
  • Provide patient counseling and manage departmental public relations.
  • Ensure patient care through morning and evening rounds and proper documentation of patient data.
  • Conduct clinical audits as required.
  • Participate in the development of SOPs, treatment guidelines & protocols, and ensure their display in relevant locations within the service area.
  • Carry out any other tasks assigned by the Medical Superintendent.
Committee Involvement:
  • Serve as a member of the hospital's Technical Committee and ensure regular participation in meetings to discuss progress against set targets, issues, and future plans.
