The RoleWe are looking for an outstanding early-career individual to work closely with Blue’s technical team. The Data Analyst will play an essential role in using machine learning to analyze Blue's geospatial and ecological project data. A skilled communicator, the Data Analyst will be able to clearly and succinctly explain processes, methodologies, and findings to various stakeholder audiences, including those without technical backgrounds.

The Data Analyst will recognize the crucial role they play in fostering the integrity of Blue's data and be creative in their approach, meticulous in their analysis, and above all else, detail-oriented. Responsibilities

Supporting Blue’s technical team in analysing geospatial and ecological data relating to Blue's carbon projects. Specific example responsibilities may include:

  • Working with mapping and field teams to carry out land cover classification, accuracy assessments and biomass data collection based on Verra's methodology.
  • Ability to use machine learning to identify, manage, and apply processes in the identification of data sources, processes, analysis, and reporting.
  • Meticulously following established industry methodologies, frameworks, and procedures to ensure data, analysis, and reporting meet required standards.
  • Communicating findings and processes in an accessible and clear way for both technical and non-technical audiences. This may be through written reports and memos, presentations, or other creative media (e.g. video or infographics).
  • Assessing current data collection, management, analysis, and reporting practices and making useful suggestions regarding process improvements.
  • Leading the charge to set the standard for how Blue manages its data.
  • Conducting research and analysis to support decision-making.
  • Developing a strong understanding of the carbon markets and Blue’s projects, with the ability to communicate status and help analyse opportunities and risks.
  • International travel to attend conferences, meet with team members and conduct field visits in different project locations.

Qualifications and Experience

  • 3+ years of work experience on a high-performing team. Work experience in a field related to geospatial and ecological data analysis or management, including GIS, geomatics, software engineering, computer science, or the natural sciences.
  • Substantive experience working with geospatial data relating to forest ecosystems (mangrove is ideal).
  • Experience with REDD+ and Verra projects will be desirable.
  • Strong organizational skills; comfortable juggling many balls at once.
  • Be comfortable working with unstructured data and inconsistent data sets. You think critically about objectives and on-the-ground limitations and find creative solutions to make the best use of what is available.
  • Strong knowledge of Google Earth Engine, Python, R, SQL, and major GIS applications (QGIS, ArcGIS, etc.).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • English required French a plus.
  • Familiarity with operating in developing countries is a plus (e.g., in West Africa).
